A perennial herbaceous plant. Height from 30 to 100 cm. It has vertically extending thickened storage adnexal roots. Rhizome with a golden hue.
The stem is erect, ribbed, hollow. The whole plant is covered with stiff short hairs. The basal and lower stem leaves are long-stemmed oblong heart-shaped-ovate, the middle stem leaves are ovate, the upper ones are lanceolate, sessile.
The inflorescence is a long one-sided brush. The flowers are light or dark purple with a length of 1.5 to 3.5 cm, the corolla is ciliated along the edge, the sepals are bent back.
The fruit is a box. Flowering in July — August, fruiting in August-September. Each plant can produce up to 15,000 seeds with high germination and volatile properties due to its lightness and the presence of a small wing.
In the first year of development, a small rosette of leaves and a taproot are formed, and in the following spring, numerous new rosettes and roots develop from the root buds.
