Chard Ruby (Beta vulgaris L. var. Cicla L.)
Is a biennial plant. In the first year, it forms a rosette of edible leaves, in the second-a process of an inflorescence with seeds. In amateur gardening in our climatic conditions, the plant is grown as an annual.
The crop consists of leaves along with their colorful petioles. The most delicious and valuable – green grass stems, slightly less delicious leaves. Chard tastes similar to celery and rhubarb.
The root is long and cylindrical with white or reddish flesh. Chard root is not suitable for consumption, it is hard, bast, unpleasant to the taste. At the end of the season, it grows to the size of a powerful fist and is colored in the same color as the leaf petioles.
Ruby-is distinguished by a medium-sized rosette of leaf blades, colored green and having a bright scarlet venation. This variety can easily tolerate short-term drought, but prefers highly fertile soils with a neutral reaction.
