Japanese walnut, Japanesse heartnut, Juglans ailanthifolia, Heartnut seds (lat. Juglans cordiformis, Juglans ailanthifolia var. cordiformis)

Deciduous tree with a luxurious spreading crown, up to 15 m high. The bark is light gray, the shoots are pubescent, sticky, brownish, with large (about 2 cm) apical buds. The plant is quite winter-hardy and can grow in severe frosty climates. Also, the heart-shaped nut is resistant to diseases and pests.

The leaf branches are large, about 1 m, each consisting of 11-15 oblong-oval leaflets, pubescent along the veins on the underside. The tree is characterized by an average growth rate.

Flowering occurs in May-June (simultaneously with the blooming of leaves); female pistillate flowers, collected in brushes of 8-12 pieces, are characterized by pink-red long stigmas; male flowers have long earrings (about 20 cm).

The fruits are collected in clusters of 8-12 pieces, the outer fruits are green, heart-shaped, about 5 cm long, about 4 cm wide. The size of the nuts, characterized by a heart-shaped shape and a sharp thin “nose”, is small, only 3-4 cm in length and about 3 cm wide and weighing 5-6 grams. The kernel is sweet, large in size, and can be easily removed from the shell.

It tolerates drought more easily than excess moisture. The soil should be neutral, light, and moisture-permeable.

USDA Hardiness Zone: 4 (-34°C to -29°C).
