A monotypic genus of annual plants of the Cereal family, consisting of a single species - Egg-tailed hare (Lagurus ovatus). Dense-core, grayish-pubescent annual cereal with a height of 8-50 (90) cm.
Stems are erect or ascending, simple or branched from the lower nodes, cranked. The leaves are usually concentrated at the base of the stems, linear, flat, short, 1-20 cm long and 2-14 mm wide, velvety-pubescent.
Inflorescence - ovate, rarely cylindrical panicle 0.5-6 cm long, 0.5-2 cm wide, very soft and densely pubescent, whitish. The spikelets are single-flowered, 7-9 mm long, without awns, mostly sterile at the base of the panicle.
The fruit is a spindle-shaped grain about 3 mm long and 0.6 mm thick.
Due to the long flowering, the hare-tail looks good in cereal borders, on slides. Suitable for growing in containers, where it is often used in combination with other plants. It is a wonderful decoration for a herb garden or gravel garden.
