Caesalpinia bonduc

Description:
A thorny vine up to 15 m tall, which can also be a shrub or small tree. It has branched stems, often covered with spines.

The leaves are compound, bipinnate, with leathery leaflets.

The flowers are large, usually yellow, and borne in racemes.

The pod is leathery and flat or inflated.

Uses:
as an ornamental plant.

USDA Hardiness Zone:
11 (from +4°C).

Growing Conditions:
Prefers loose, neutral soil (pH 6.5-7.5).
Light: Prefers bright light, requiring at least 8 hours per day.
Temperature: Optimum summer temperatures are 21-25°C, and winter temperatures are 15-18°C. Watering: generously in summer, approximately 1-2 times a week; reduce watering in winter.

Growing from seeds:
Before sowing, soak the seeds in warm water for 2 days. Then scarify (damage the seed coat with a file or sandpaper).

Sow the seeds superficially in a moist peat-sand mixture, cover with plastic wrap, and place in a warm place (+25°C). Monitor the humidity daily and ventilate the seeds.

The first sprouts will appear within 10 days to 4 months.

After a couple of true leaves appear on the plants, they can be transplanted into individual containers.
