Bhut Jolokia Chocolate Hot Pepper.
Description: A rare, super-hot chili pepper variety native to India. The bush grows to a height of 130-150 cm.
The fruits are wrinkled, up to 9 cm long, and chocolate-colored. The flavor is smoky, sweet, and fruity.
On the Scoville scale, it measures up to 1,200,000 units of heat.
Uses: For making hot sauces and for drying.
Growing Conditions: Due to its long growing season, it is usually grown in greenhouses, hotbeds, or containers.
Growing from Seed: Before planting, prepare the seeds by soaking them in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for half an hour, then wrapping them in a damp cloth and leaving them at 25ºC until they sprout. After this, carefully plant the seedlings in moist soil to a depth of 5-10 mm, leaving at least 5 cm between them. Cover with plastic wrap or glass, and place in a warm location. As soon as seedlings begin to emerge, move the plants into the light. Remember to keep the substrate slightly moist, but avoid overwatering. Periodically, it's a good idea to loosen the soil between seedlings. When the seedlings develop two pairs of true leaves, transplant them into shallow pots 8-10 cm in diameter. Water the seedlings before transplanting. Before planting, fertilize the hot pepper seedlings twice: two weeks after transplanting and two weeks after the first fertilizing.
Hot peppers should be planted outdoors when the seedlings are just beginning to form their first buds. Maintaining an average daily temperature of 15-17ºC is also essential. Two weeks before planting, hot pepper seedlings are hardened off: daily "walking" of the seedlings in the open air, starting with 15-20 minutes, gradually increasing the duration.
