A large deciduous shrub, in adulthood (after 10 years) reaches a height and diameter of 3-4 m. Young bushes grow straight upward, and then the branches begin to droop, forming an arc. The color of the bark and leaves is red-brown with a purple tint; there are thorns along the branches.

The leaves are round, up to 3-5 cm long, dark red with a bluish bloom in summer. Fall color is various shades of red and orange.

Blooms in May. The flowers are yellow-red, collected in racemes, up to 5 cm in length. The fruits are edible berries, bright red, up to 0.8 cm long, ripen in late September - early October, if they are not collected, they remain on the clusters until December-January.

In severe frosts, the ends of branches and young plants may freeze and when there is little snow, it is better to cover them. Tolerates gas pollution, is resistant to powdery mildew, tolerates partial shade and open sunny places.

Almost any soil is suitable, for example, it grows on clay and loamy soils without much hassle. However, for a good exterior, we recommend that you still prepare a place for it with moisture- and breathable, neutral and nutritious soil, with a drainage layer protecting it from excess moisture.

USDA Hardiness Zone: 3 (-40°C to -34°C).
