Amla (Indian gooseberry, Emblica, Mirobalan gray, Amalaki, lat. Phyllanthus Emblica)

Deciduous tree, reaching a height of 5-8 m. The trunk is often curved, the crown is sparse, light green. The bark of the tree is smooth, light brown, easily peels off in layers.

The leaves are pinnately complex, light green in hue.

The flowers are nondescript, axillary, greenish-yellow, collected in inflorescences. The flowering of amla begins in March.

The fruits are round, small berries with a smooth, transparent, greenish-yellow skin. In appearance, amla berries resemble the fruits of ordinary gooseberries. The fruit is divided into 6-8 segments by thin lines on the peel. Under the hard skin there is a juicy crispy pulp, in which small seeds ripen (usually there are 6). The fruits of the tree ripen in autumn – from November to February.

Fruits, seeds, flowers, bark of amla are widely used in cosmetology and medicine. Amla berries are used fresh, dried, candied, juice, jam are made from them, added to rice, ground into powder.

It can be grown in poor and saline soils, in regions not rich in water. It grows fast.

Withstands short-term frosts up to -1C.
