Common quince, or oblong quince (Latin Cydonia oblonga).

Deciduous tree or shrub from 1.5 to 4-5 m high, with branches rising obliquely upward.

The bark is thin, on the trunk and old branches dark gray, reddish-brown or blackish-brown, smooth; on young ones - brownish-gray; shoots are gray-green.

The leaves are ovate or oval, dark green above, glabrous, grayish below with tomentose pubescence, 5-10, up to 12 cm long, up to 7.5 cm wide.

The flowers are regular, mostly solitary, on short tomentose stalks. The calyx is five-parted, remaining with the fruit. Blooms in May - June.

The fruit is a false apple with five multi-seeded nests, hairy, almost spherical, lemon or dark yellow in color, sometimes with a reddish one-sided “tan”, initially tomentose, smooth and hard when ripe, 2.5-3.5 cm in diameter in wild and up to 15 cm in cultivated forms.

The pulp is very aromatic, low-juicy, hard from numerous stony cells. The taste is tart, astringent, sweetish. The seeds are reddish-brown, obovate, irregularly angular, with a very slimy outer skin; weight of 1000 seeds is 24-44 g. The fruits ripen in September - October.

Quince is also grown as an ornamental plant; it is suitable for creating hedges and tolerates pruning well.

It is most productive on heavy loams, but bears fruit earlier on sandy loam soils. At the same time, on dry soils the fruits are smaller and drier, while on wet soils they are more juicy, but woody and astringent.

USDA Hardiness Zone: 8 (-12°C to -7°C).
