Black barberry
A fruit perennial shrub up to 2-2.5 m high. There are several varieties whose fruits are painted in a rich blue-black color.
It has gray-green leaves and multi-flowered brushes, often consisting of 20 orange-yellow flowers.
The leaves of the shrub are usually regular, whole, light green or dark green, leathery.
Depending on the variety, barberry with black fruits can bloom from the end of May to the beginning of July with small yellow fragrant flowers.
The berries are black, with a bluish bloom, up to 1 cm long, oblong. It is very similar to the multi-legged barberry and differs from it only in longer inflorescences and oblong, rather than spherical fruits.
It is used in decorative gardening, great for planting hedges.
Fruits are used for food. Its slightly frozen berries give a delicious juice, which is added to tea, jelly, etc.
Jam is made from barberry, jellies, juices, syrups, sherbets are prepared, and berries are also added as a pleasant sour seasoning to savory sauces for game (not bad for goose), fried beef and veal.
Light-loving. Most types of garden soils are suitable for planting. Frost-resistant, drought-resistant. Water moderately, because it does not tolerate stagnant moisture.
