Chinese prinsepia or Chinese plane seed (lat. Prinsepia sinensis)

Shrub 1.5-2 m high. The bark is light gray or brownish, peeling off in longitudinal stripes; on young shoots it is dark, smooth, covered with slightly flaky glossy skin, 6-2 cm in length. In the shade, individual branches rest on neighboring trees and stretch up to 5-6 m.

Leaves are lanceolate or oblong-ovate, 5-8 cm long and 1.5-3 cm wide, entire or slightly crenate.

The flowers are yellow, about 15 cm in diameter, with a delicate aroma, 2-4 in axillary bunches.

The fruits are spherical or ovoid bright red drupes 1.5-2 cm in diameter, with sweet and sour pulp, edible. The stone is flat, 1-1.2 cm long, with a characteristic grooved-tubercular surface.

It blooms in May-June, the fruits ripen at the end of August.

Grows well in open, sunny areas. The soil at the planting site should be light, breathable, and fertile. Not drought resistant.

USDA Hardiness Zone: 4 (-34°C to -29°C).
