A species of the genus Hawthorn (Crataegus) of the Pink family (Rosaceae). A tall shrub, rarely a small tree, 1-4 (up to 6) m high, with a trunk up to 10 cm in diameter, covered with dark brown or brown-gray bark. Branches are blood-red or dark, shiny; young shoots are sparsely hairy, then glabrous. The spines are straight, hard, thick, 1.5-4 cm long, about 2 mm thick, dark red, few or completely absent on young shoots.

The buds are ovate, obtuse, 4-6 mm long; lateral oblong-ovate, pointed, completely naked. The leaves are alternate, ovate, obovate or shirokorombic, with an acute apex and a wedge-shaped base, an unevenly sawed edge.

The inflorescences are corymbose, dense, multi-flowered, 3-4 cm long, 4-5 cm wide, glabrous or with slightly hairy pedicels, with falling filamentous bracts. Flowers with double perianth, bisexual, 12-15 mm in diameter. Blooms profusely in early summer for 10-12 days. Honeybee, gives bees nectar and pollen.

The fruits are almost spherical or short-ellipsoidal, 8-10 mm in diameter, blood-red, very rarely orange-yellow, mature transparent, with a remaining calyx, with a powdery pulp.

It bears fruit in September - October. It grows slowly, but lives up to 200-300 years. Decorative during flowering and in autumn. It is most often used in hedges.
