Common buckthorn, European buckthorn, Purging buckthorn, Seeds of purgative buckthorn (lat. Rhamnus cathartica)

The shrub is about 3 m high, with protruding branches. The bark of young shoots is silver-gray in color, later it becomes brown-black. The plant is easily distinguished by the straight spines, into which the tops of the branches turn.
Opposite leaves with petioles, ovate or elliptic, slightly pointed, glossy, with three pairs of arcuate lateral veins, along the edge of the city-pilate.
In the axils of the leaves, four-membered inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers are collected in bundles of 10-15 in umbrellas. It blooms from May to June.
The flowers develop rounded fruits-cenocarpic drupes-the size of a pea, first green, then blackening. The bones are convex on the dorsal side and with a weak edge on the abdominal side. In contrast, the bones of the poisonous fruits of the closely related species of alder buckthorn are flat-convex, with a cartilaginous double "beak".
