A perennial herbaceous plant that grows no more than 150 cm in height. The plant develops a new root tuber every year, while the root of the previous year dies off.

The leaves are deeply divided into five to seven lobes. Dark blue flowers form at the top of the stem. The sepal has the shape of a bumblebee, and, indeed, this insect is almost the only pollinator of monkshood. The flowering period is from June to August.

It is used as an ornamental garden plant.
