Black chia or Spanish sage (lat. Salvia hispanica) is a plant in the Clary family, a species of the genus Sage.
An annual herbaceous plant up to 1 m high. The opposite leaves are 4-8 cm long and 3-5 cm wide. The flowers are white or purple. The seeds are small oval, about 1 mm in diameter. They are black in color, dotted on the surface with a relief pattern.
Chia seeds contain 20 % protein, 34 % fat, 25 % dietary fiber, and a significant amount of antioxidants. Especially rich in linolenic acid and other Omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids. Chia seeds also contain vitamins: A, C, E, B1, B2, PP, as well as a large amount of potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium and zinc.
Flour from toasted seeds is used to prepare nutritious drinks. Oatmeal from them, mixed with water and pepper, is long preserved, highly nutritious and well satisfies hunger. Seed oil dries quickly and is used to make paints.
