Evergreen coniferous tree. Depending on climatic conditions, the height of adult specimens is 7-15 m, the trunk diameter is 15-50 cm. In favorable conditions, trees with a height of about 30 m are found.

The bark is thin, gray-brown. The needles are 6-15 mm long, blue-green or green. The cones are 2.5-4 cm long and 1-2 cm wide, one of the smallest among spruce trees, from red-brown to purple.

It is undemanding to the climate and is widespread in permafrost areas, and in the southern part - in sphagnum bogs and wet lowlands.

It does not make any special demands on the soil composition; it can grow on damp soils and peat bogs. It develops the densest crown in a bright planting site, but is also quite decorative when shaded. Only young plants will need care - watering and mulching.
