A type of larch, according to the international classification - a variety of larch Gmelina - Lat. Larix gmelinii var. olgensis, belongs to the Pine family (Pinaceae). A summer-green monoecious coniferous tree up to 25 m high, less often up to 30 m. and up to 80 cm in diameter, rarely straight—stemmed.

The bark of the trunk is dark gray-brown, in old trees it is powerful. Young shoots are light brown or beige-pink, densely pubescent with stiff red hairs.

Young shoots are densely pubescent, reddish-brown. Needles from 2 to 3 cm long, narrow, keeled, dark green, glaucous from below. Sheds needles for the winter.

The cones have a rounded-ovoid shape, a length of 1.8 - 2.5 cm, in the opened state their width is from 1.6 to 2 cm. From 25 to 30 scales are arranged in 5-6 rows.

On wetlands, as well as on rocky and wind-breaking areas, it is represented by stunted curved trunks up to 10-12 m high and 20-50 cm in diameter; on wind-breaking areas it has a deformed flag-shaped crown.

Life expectancy is 250-300 years or more. It is not demanding on soil moisture. Light-loving, wind-resistant. It is characterized by rapid growth.
