A type of larch, according to the international classification - a variety of Gmelin larch - lat. Larix gmelinii var. olgensis, belongs to the Pine family (Pinaceae). Summer-green monoecious coniferous tree up to 25, less often up to 30 m high and up to 80 cm in diameter, rarely straight-trunked.

The bark of the trunk is dark gray-brown, thick in old trees. Young shoots are light brown or beige-pink, densely covered with coarse red hairs.

Young shoots are densely pubescent, reddish-brown. The needles are from 2 to 3 cm long, narrow, keeled, dark green, bluish below. It sheds its needles for the winter.

The cones have a rounded-ovoid shape, length 1.8 - 2.5 cm, when opened their width ranges from 1.6 to 2 cm. From 25 to 30 scales are arranged in 5 - 6 rows.

In swampy, as well as rocky and windy areas, it is represented by low-growing, curved trunks up to 10-12 m in height and 20-50 cm in diameter; in windy areas it has a deformed flag-shaped crown.

Life expectancy is 250-300 years or more. Photophilous, wind-resistant. Characterized by rapid growth. Not particularly picky about soil, the plant is not unequivocal about soil moisture: if there is a lack of it, it gets sick. Resistant to drought, wind, gas and smoke.
