A very large tree with a pyramid-shaped crown. Some trees reach 30 m in height, the diameter of the trunk of large trees reaches 70 cm. Growing independently, the formation of the crown begins almost from the root, and in a dense forest somewhat higher. Tree growth directly depends on the amount of light.
A characteristic feature of Siberian spruce are short and prickly needles. The rigid needles, tetrahedral in cross-section, reach a maximum of 20 mm in length and are colored dark green.
If compared with other types of spruce, the brown cones of this conifer are smaller (maximum length - 60 mm), but they are quite wide, and they are covered with round scales; the seeds fully ripen in the first autumn weeks. The dark gray seeds are about 5 mm in size and have wings.
Spruce is not picky in care and easily adapts to harsh living conditions. Easily tolerates low temperatures and is common in permafrost. Although under such conditions the soil should be quite fertile. The main condition for its habitat should be high humidity. Very shade tolerant. Not salt tolerant.
