Juglans cinerea (Juglans cinerea).
Description: A deciduous tree up to 30 m tall with a tent-shaped, spreading crown.
The leaves are large, odd-pinnate, similar to those of the Manchurian walnut, but somewhat shorter.
The flowers are round, flat, and greenish-yellow. Blooms in May.
The fruits are elongated ovoid drupes, pointed at the apex, up to 6 cm long and up to 3 cm thick. The flavor is buttery, without bitterness. Ripens in October.
Uses: The fruits are eaten raw or added to flour; unripe fruits are pickled. The tree is used in landscaping as an ornamental plant.
Growing Conditions: Suitable for growing in full sun or partial shade with moist, fertile soil.
USDA Hardiness Zone: 3 (-40°C to -34°C).
Growing from Seed: Seeds require stratification at temperatures between 1°C and 5°C for 4-5 months.
Then place the seeds in a container of water so that they are more than half covered. When the nuts open (approximately 2-7 days), place the nuts on their edges in moist sawdust or sand, sprinkle with sawdust or sand, and maintain a temperature between 25°C and 28°C.
When the roots reach 1 cm in length, transfer the containers to a cool room at a temperature between 3°C and 5°C. They will grow there until planting in soil.
Nut trees do not tolerate transplanting well, so it is recommended to transplant young seedlings into their original location as soon as possible. When planting, trim the roots of the seedlings or pinch off the taproot, otherwise the nuts will grow slowly.
