Uzbek Sweet Almond (Prunus dulcis var. dulcis, Amygdalus communis var. dulcis).
Description: A shrub or small tree 4-6 m tall with a rounded crown.
The leaves are petiolate, lanceolate, with a long, pointed tip.
The flowers are solitary, up to 2.5 cm in diameter, with white or light pink petals, numerous stamens, and a single pistil. They consist of a cup-shaped, symphyllous calyx and a pink or red corolla. The flowers open before the leaves.
The fruit is a dry, velvety-pubescent, oblong-round drupe with a leathery, green, fleshy, inedible pericarp. The pits are covered with small pits, sometimes with furrows, 2.5–3.5 cm long, and weigh 1–5 g.
Growing conditions: It does not tolerate waterlogging or spring frosts after the growing season begins. It is a valuable early spring honey plant, producing nectar and abundant pollen.
It grows and bears fruit well in light clays and loams, as well as in ordinary, carbonate, and leached chernozems.
USDA Hardiness Zone: 6 (-23°C to -18°C).
Growing from seed: Sow the seeds in spring or before winter. If you decide to sow almonds in spring, you must stratify the seeds by placing them in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator for 3–4 months. Almond seeds are sown in furrows 8-10 cm deep, spaced 10 cm apart, with a distance of 45-60 cm between furrows. The seeds will germinate the following year in April, and you will need to water, weed, and cultivate the soil. In July, when the seedlings reach 50-60 cm in height, side branches on the trunks below 10-12 cm from the surface should be cut off with pruning shears. By this time, the seedling's trunk thickness at the root collar approaches 1 cm, meaning the tree can now be used as a rootstock, but first it must be transplanted to a permanent location and allowed to establish.
