A plant of the Holly family (Aquifoliaceae), a species of the genus Holly, native to Western and Southern Europe, Northwest Africa and Southwest Asia. An evergreen tree with a height of 10-25 m and a trunk diameter of 30-80 cm . The bark of the tree is gray smooth.

The leaves are alternate leathery, elliptical or ovate, dark green shiny on the upper side and light green on the lower, 5-12 cm long and 2-6 cm wide. The edges of the leaves are jagged and wavy-curved. There are species with a white border on the leaves.

The flowers are bisexual small white nondescript with four petals. Fruits are spherical drupes of red, yellow or orange color, 6-10 mm in diameter. Blooms in May - June. It bears fruit from September to February. Holly berries are not used for food.

It grows slowly, about 10-12 cm per year, lives up to 100 years.
