Himalayan Persimmon (Diospyros kaki)

Description:
A deciduous tree growing to 6-12 m tall with a rounded, spreading crown.

The leaves are large, oval, green, and turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow in autumn.

The flowers are small, fragrant, white.

The fruits are large, round or oblong (5-10 cm in diameter) with smooth, bright orange skin. The flesh is sweet, rich, and juicy when fully ripe.

Uses:
Fresh, dried, used in desserts, and jams.

Growing Conditions:
Prefers a sunny location with well-drained loamy or sandy soil with a pH of 6-7.5.

USDA Hardiness Zone:
6 (-23°C to -18°C).

Growing from seed:
Stratification at temperatures between 3 and 10°C for 2-3 months is recommended.

Sow in mid-February in a soil mixture of peat (or black soil) and sand in a 1:2 ratio. Place the seeds to a depth of 1-1.5 cm. Seedlings emerge in 2-3 weeks. Water as the top layer of soil dries.

Containerized seedlings with leaves are planted from May to June, providing shade from direct sunlight. Bare-leaf seedlings can be planted in November or March-April, in cloudy weather, when the temperature is around 5°C. Persimmon prefers good watering, at least once a week. However, it does not tolerate flooding and sometimes tolerates a high water table or short-term drought.

To ensure good ripening of the wood before the cold weather, as well as for a better harvest, persimmon should be pinched at the ends of the shoots at the end of July and fertilized twice a year: in early June with plant compost, and in late summer with wood ash in small quantities so as not to burn the roots (half a glass of ash per bucket of water).
