Prunus spinosa fresh seeds, Blackthorn seeds, Sloe, Berries shrub, Fruit tree, Fruit berry seeds, Organic seeds, Non GMO (lat. Prunus spinosa).

A thorny shrub 3.5-4.5 m high, less often a low-growing tree no higher than 8 m. Growing and expanding with the help of root suckers, the thorn forms dense, prickly and impenetrable thickets. The branches are abundantly covered with thorns.

The leaves are elliptical or obovate, serrated, up to 5 cm long.

The flowers are small, white, open singly or in pairs in early spring, when there are no leaves yet. Flowering is very abundant, in April-May, before leafing out.

The fruits are round, single-drug fruits, similar to plums, with a bluish waxy coating, 12 mm in diameter, tart-sour in taste, and ripen late. Honey plant gives bees mainly pollen and a little nectar. The fruits are consumed raw, and they are used to make jam and compote.

Blackthorn is also used as decorative hedges. Blackthorn bushes are specially planted on slopes, in ravines, along the banks of rivers and canals to strengthen them. Serves as an excellent rootstock for bush forms of peach, apricot and plum.

It can also grow on clayey, saline, dry and sandy soil. But you should not plant it in too wet or heavy soil, since in such an area there is a high risk of frostbite of the bush. Prefers a well-lit place; absence of gusty winds.

USDA Hardiness Zone: 5 (-29°C to -23°C).
