Herbaceous annual plant up to 80 cm high. Pedicels are long, thin, strong.

The flowers are scarlet in color, with four oval or rounded petals up to 6 cm wide and a dark, almost black spot at the base of the petals. The buds are up to 2.5 cm long, oval-oblong in shape. Stamens are numerous. Blooms from May to July.

The fruits are almost spherical capsules. Ripen in August-September.

Grown as an ornamental plant. Secondary honey plant.

Grows best in sunny areas with well-drained, fertile soil.
