A perennial herbaceous plant; the type species of the genus Cotton wool of the Kutrov family. Height 1-2 meters. All parts of the plant secrete milky juice when damaged.

The leaves are opposite, simple, broad, ovate-lanceolate, 7-25 cm long and 3-12 cm wide, usually with a wavy edge and a red central vein.

Inflorescence umbrella. The flowers are grayish-purple or pink-purple, 1-2 cm in diameter, fragrant. They have complex adaptations for pollination by insects.

The fruit is a swollen sickle-shaped green box with a corrugated surface, when ripe, it opens on the sides. The seeds are dark brown, equipped with long snow-white silky hairs.

The Syrian cotton wool is mainly used as an ornamental plant. A good honey plant. Young plants are used for food, instead of asparagus. Cotton wool seeds contain up to 20-25% of fatty oil.

With seed propagation, plants bloom in the second or third year. Flowering in the second half of summer, 3-4 weeks.
