Datura stramonium (Henbane, Angel's pipe, Moonflower, Datura)

Description:
An annual herbaceous plant growing 50-100 cm tall. It is classified as a poisonous herbaceous plant and is part of the Solanaceae family, along with potatoes and tomatoes.

Datura datura has a thick, erect stem with a hollow structure. Sometimes it is colored reddish-purple at the base. The first, central shoot forks at a height of about 30 cm. A conical bud emerges from the fork. It grows and opens into a funnel up to 20 cm in diameter.

Large, fragrant flowers resemble lilies with five petals. White or purple flowers are borne singly in the convolutions of the stem. The next flowers appear in 1-2 weeks. The bush will be completely covered in flowers closer to autumn, when several flowers will bloom each night. Hybrid forms of Datura bloom in purple, yellow, lilac, cream, and violet. The buds open in the evening and last only one night. At their peak, the open flowers fill the night air with an exotic fragrance.

Cultivated as a garden plant.

Growing Conditions:
Prefers a sunny location, well protected from wind. Loose, nutritious, and well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH (pH 6.0-6.5). If the soil is heavy, add sand and humus.

Growing from Seed:
Seeds germinate most successfully at temperatures no lower than 30-35°C. After dry storage for 6 months, the seeds acquire the ability to germinate in a wider range of temperatures. Cold stratification stimulates the germination of dormant seeds. To do this, moisten a cloth napkin, wrap the seeds in it, place them in a plastic bag, and store them on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator for three to four weeks. During this time, microcracks will appear in the seed coat, which will speed up germination. It's best to germinate outdoors, as the seeds take a long time to germinate and can become sour and spoil in a pot. The soil should be loose, nutritious, and rich in compost. Choose a sunny, wind-protected location. Outdoor soil erodes more quickly, so sow the seeds slightly deeper, about 1.0 cm. Space the plants at least 1 meter apart; datura is a vigorous plant and can cover large areas. Seedlings should appear in about two months.
