Platycladus orientalis.

Description:
An evergreen coniferous tree or shrub with a conical or rounded crown composed of flat, uniformly arranged branches. It can reach 18–20 m in the wild, but in cultivation it typically grows to 4–10 m.

The needles are dark green, but may acquire a brown or golden hue in winter.

The cones are miniature, yellowish, with horns-like projections.

Uses:
In landscape design for hedges and individual plantings.

Growing Conditions:
Grows best in full sun, but tolerates partial shade. Undemanding, it prefers well-drained, loose, moderately acidic soils, including calcareous ones. It does not tolerate waterlogging.

Growing from seeds:
Seeds should be stratified in a cool place at +3–+5°C (37–41°F) for 2-3 months.

Sow seeds for seedlings in containers with loose, moist soil in late winter to early spring.

Make furrows up to 1 cm deep, sow the seeds, and cover them with peat or sawdust to retain moisture.

After the first shoots emerge, thin them out, leaving the strongest shoots. In their first year, seedlings usually grow no more than 5-8 cm.

Young trees should not be transplanted to their permanent location until after the third spring.
