Deciduous tree up to 30 m high. The bark is thick, rough, with cracks.
The leaves are small, 2-6 cm long and 2-3 cm wide, alternate, pinnate, almost kidney-shaped, grayish-green.
The flowers are small, pale yellowish-green, in axillary and terminal loose paniculate racemes. Blooms from July to September.
The bean is flat, samara-shaped, 5-7.6 x 1-1.5 cm, oblong-lanceolate, leathery, narrowed at both ends, with parallel longitudinal veins, contains 1 seed at the apex.
Moderately photophilous. The plant is thermophilic and does not tolerate sub-zero temperatures.
It grows best on sandstone and tolerates acidic and neutral soils. Prefers a pH in the range of 5.5–7.5, tolerates 4.5–8.
