The stem (trunk) is columnar, green, 30-75 cm in diameter, unbranched, erect. It has mainly 11-15 vertical ribs.

The flowers are white, showy, up to 12 cm long and 5-6 cm in diameter. The buds open once in the late afternoon and remain open until noon or evening the next day. The flowers are funnel-shaped with creamy white petals. Blooms from late April to early June.

The fruits are ovoid, scaly, spineless, up to 7 cm long and 4 cm in diameter, fleshy, initially green, becoming red or purple when ripe. The juicy pulp of the fruit is bright red, sweet and edible. The fruits ripen from late May to mid-July.
