Stratification is not required. Sowing to a depth of 0.5 cm.
How to plant sage seeds
To get seedlings, seeds are sown in late February - early March. Previously, they can be disinfected in a 1% solution of potassium permanganate. As a rule, shoots appear after a couple of weeks, and picking can be done as early as the 3rd week.
For quick and effective germination, it is worth pouring expanded clay on the bottom of the box, and on it - a light soil substrate, which is sold in any specialized store. The mixture should fill the entire volume of the box, not reaching the edge of 2 cm. The earth is moistened, covered with glass or plastic wrap and stopped for the night. Sage seeds are very small and can be mixed with coarse sand for easy planting. They are scattered over the surface, lightly pressed down with the palm of your hand, slightly moistened and again covered with glass or film. The box must be kept at a temperature of +20 ... +25 degrees Celsius.
When the first sprouts appear, the box is moved to a sunny place (on the windowsill). If this is not possible, then the seedlings need to be provided with artificial lighting. For young plants, daylight hours should be at least 12 hours.
Watering a very "young" sage should be moderate. Excess water is the cause of rotting of the base of the shoots. If this happens, you need to reduce the amount of liquid, and sprinkle the surface with dry earth. When the seedlings grow up, it is recommended to transplant them into another container.
In areas with a warm climate, sage seeds can be planted immediately in open ground in April. Before that, they must be soaked in a special growth stimulator. In autumn, only dry seeds are planted in the ground. The sowing depth should be 7 cm, the distance between rows should be approximately 40 cm.
Picking and landing in open ground
Sage picking when grown from seeds is done when 2 true leaves appear on a young plant. The sprout is transplanted into a separate container and covered with a paper sheet for 2-3 days. To make the sage grow lush and beautiful, after the formation of the 6th leaf, the top can be pinched. Seedlings are “transported” to a new place of residence as soon as warm weather sets in and frosts pass. Before planting, the soil must be dug up, weeds must be removed. If necessary, humus can be added to the ground. It is better to choose a well-lit area, as sage loves the sun. Seedlings are planted in rows, maintaining a distance between individual individuals of 20-30 cm.
Care
Sage is a rather unpretentious plant, and caring for it involves regular loosening, weeding and top dressing. For the winter, it is better to “wrap” the plant with fallen leaves. In the spring, it is worth cutting off last year's shoots, leaving 10 cm from the root. Watering should be moderate, water stagnation should not be allowed. It is impossible to grow sage from seeds without proper and timely feeding. At the beginning of its “life”, the plant perceives nitrogen fertilizers well: during this period, for example, slurry can be applied to the soil in a ratio of 1:10. When the buds begin to ripen, you can pamper sage with potassium and phosphorus at the rate of 20 g per 1 sq. m.
