True cacti (family Cactaceae) are native to the Americas, ranging from Canada to Patagonia, but the collector genera in this collection — Mammillaria, Rebutia, Turbinicarpus, Lobivia, Aylostera, Parodia — are concentrated in the highland Andes and Mexican plateau at 1,500–4,200 m elevation. At those altitudes, nights drop to near-freezing even in summer, which is why most of these species tolerate dry cold down to 5°C and grow well under glass in temperate climates.

Oreshka Seeds — Insight

Turbinicarpus is one of the most threatened cactus genera in the wild — 14 of the 30 known species are listed as endangered or critically endangered on the IUCN Red List. The collection includes 10 Turbinicarpus varieties with field-collection codes, grown from legally acquired seed stock.

What separates the 183 varieties here from retail stock is the level of taxonomic precision. Each listing carries either a genus-species name with variety code or a field-collection number (KK, WR, VG, FR, SB, ML) tracing back to a specific collection site. Mammillaria apozolensis v. saltensis L-1045, for instance, is a distinct population from Saltillo, Coahuila — not a generic Mammillaria mix. This specificity matters for collectors who track provenance and for anyone who wants to know what they are actually growing.

The collection suits three types of grower: collectors who want rare species with documented origin; indoor gardeners looking for compact, long-lived plants that flower annually; and botanic gardens or educational institutions sourcing documented wild-type material. B2B orders from 500 seeds are available on request.

Why Oreshka Cacti Seeds

Field-coded provenance

Varieties carry KK, WR, VG, FR, SB, and ML field-collection numbers linking each seed lot to a documented origin site. Retail packs carry no such data. Collector strains like Turbinicarpus klinkerianus and Rebutia archibuiningiana L-404 are not commercially available elsewhere.

183 varieties across 13 genera

Mammillaria (19 spp.), Lobivia (18), Rebutia (12), Aylostera (11), Turbinicarpus (10), Parodia (8), Acanthocalycium (7) and 6 further genera. Priced from €5.00 per packet — a full starter collection of 10 diverse species costs under €55.

Worldwide dispatch

Seeds are sealed in moisture-proof packets and dispatched within 2–3 business days from our warehouse. Tracked shipping available to 190+ countries. Orders over €30 ship free to EU destinations.

Germination & Care Tips

Surface sowing — do not bury the seeds

Cactus seeds need light to germinate. Press them lightly onto a moist mineral substrate (50% coarse sand + 50% cactus compost) but do not cover. Maintain 25–30°C under a clear humidity dome. Most genera show radicles within 7–14 days.

Reduce humidity after germination

Once 80% of seedlings have emerged — typically at day 10–14 — begin lifting the dome for 1–2 hours daily. Full removal at week 4–6 reduces damping-off risk. Seedling roots need air exchange as much as moisture.

First water: 3 weeks after sowing

Do not water for the first 3 weeks if the substrate was moist at sowing. After that, water lightly from below (tray watering) every 10–14 days during the growing season. Turbinicarpus and Mammillaria are particularly sensitive to stem rot if the crown stays wet.

First repotting at 6–8 months

Seedlings reach 5–10 mm in diameter by month 6–8 and benefit from individual 5 cm pots at that stage. Use a 1:1 mix of mineral grit and cactus compost. Most genera will be large enough to identify species-level features (spine colour, rib count) by their first winter.

Frequently Asked

What types of cactus seeds does Oreshka Seeds offer?

Oreshka carries 183 cactus varieties across 13 genera: Mammillaria (19 varieties), Lobivia (18), Rebutia (12), Aylostera (11), Turbinicarpus (10), Parodia (8), Acanthocalycium (7), Notocactus (5), and more. All are priced from €5.00 per packet and ship worldwide.

Which cactus is easiest to grow from seed for beginners?

Rebutia and Mammillaria are the most forgiving genera for beginners. Rebutia senilis (SC106) germinates in 7–10 days at 25°C and flowers within 2–3 years. Mammillaria species tolerate minor watering errors better than most cacti, making them a reliable first choice.

Can I grow cactus seeds in Zone 5 or in the UK?

Yes — under glass. Most of the genera in this collection (Mammillaria, Rebutia, Turbinicarpus) are native to Bolivian and Mexican highlands at 2,000–4,000 m elevation and tolerate winter cold down to 5°C if kept dry. They are grown successfully as indoor or greenhouse plants across the UK and Northern Europe.

What is the difference between Rebutia and Lobivia cactus seeds?

Rebutia forms small clustering globes, typically under 8 cm wide, and flowers freely from the base from year 2–3 onward. Lobivia grows slightly larger (up to 15 cm) and produces larger, often brighter blooms but is slightly slower to reach flowering size. Both genera are native to the Andes and share similar germination requirements: 25–28°C, surface-sown on mineral substrate.

Can cactus seeds be grown permanently in pots?

Yes, all genera in this collection are well-suited to permanent container cultivation. Use a 1:1 mix of coarse sand or perlite and regular potting compost with a minimum pot depth of 8 cm. Repot every 2–3 years. Turbinicarpus and Mammillaria stay compact (under 10 cm) and are ideal for windowsill collections.

How long does it take for cactus seeds to germinate and flower?

Most genera germinate in 7–14 days at 25–30°C under a humidity dome. Rebutia and Aylostera can flower in as little as 18–24 months from seed. Mammillaria typically flowers at 3–4 years. Turbinicarpus is slower — expect first blooms at 4–6 years, but the miniature spination is distinctive even as a juvenile plant.

Why buy cactus seeds from Oreshka rather than a local garden centre?

Local centres typically stock 5–10 common Mammillaria species. Oreshka carries 183 varieties including locality-coded collector strains (KK, WR, VG, FR, SB field numbers) unavailable in retail. All packets are sealed moisture-proof and dispatched within 2–3 business days. Germination rates are tested at 25–30°C across multiple batches before listing.
